In their latest assignment, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that there is no safe amount of alcohol that does not affect health. In their statement published in the Lancet Public Health, the agency stated that 200 million people are at risk of developing alcohol-attributable cancer in Europe. It revealed that all alcohol-attributable cancers in Europe are caused by "light" and "moderate" alcohol consumption.
The statement showed that alcohol causes at least seven types of cancer, such as bowel cancer and female breast cancer. Dr. Carina Ferreira-Borges, Unit Lead for Noncommunicable Disease Management and Regional Advisor for Alcohol and Illicit Drugs, Europe, stated that there is no so-called safe level of alcohol use.
She further clarified that currently there is no evidence indicating the existence of a threshold at which the carcinogenic effects of alcohol "switch on" and start to manifest in the human body.
